For as long as I can remember I have associated clay with community and joy. My aunt introduced me to clay at a young age in her basement workshop. Neighborhood women would meet, chat and ‘paint their own’ ceramic figurines. I would find myself transported to an alternate reality as I sat and painted. During high school I was first introduced to the wheel. I spent countless hours in a meditative state and often required a pass to excuse my lateness for some class. I attended Rhode Island School of Design where I received my BFA in Ceramics (2001). I learned new techniques and met amazing people which further influenced my love of clay. Ceramics continues to be a medium of pleasure and fellowship for me. I am blessed to have found the Expressions Pottery Workshop where I can continue to feed my soul surrounded by beautiful artists in an amazingly well run studio.
My work is an improvised combination of hand building, extruding and wheel throwing techniques to create functional, sculptural and functional sculptural pieces. Working with clay is therapeutic / meditative. I enjoy getting lost in my work. When working with clay I can either start with a concept (some functional piece I want to make) or I find myself intuitively putting different pieces (slabs/coils/pitch/extruded/thrown & altered) of clay together like a puzzle - does it fit here? Does it ‘feel’ right there? My art is very much about process.
